Anime Conji 2012: Con Report by Mike Rollerson
This past weekend I was able to attend Anime Conji, “San Diego’s First, Only, and Best ^_< Anime Convention!” and had a great time taking photos, meeting new people and catching up with some of those I’ve met and worked with at past conventions.
2012 marked the 3rd year of Anime Conji; Held at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center in San Diego it’s definitely one of the nicest locations I’ve been to for hotel/convention photoshoots and with a very large portion of the hotel and convention center being reserved just for Anime Conji, it normally would have allowed for a lot of variety in locations/looks that would work well just about any of the cosplays on display. Unfortunately, weather limited the use of most outdoor locations on Saturday/Sunday as we saw everything from sunny days with clear skies to heavy rain, strong winds and hail. Despite this, overall attendee feedback seemed very positive throughout and the convention was prepared for the weather, setting up tents in some of the outdoor areas where events were being held or even moving them to an alternate location on-site. The other challenge faced by Anime Conji this weekend was that the convention was held at the same time as Wondercon just a couple hours away in Anaheim,CA – despite this, attendee turnout at Conji seemed very good throughout the weekend.
I had a great time at the convention and ran into a number of familiar faces (photographers/videographers, cosplayers, artists and general attendees) as well as had the opportunity to meet and work with some great new people, all of which are always a highlight of any convention for me. I spent a good part of the weekend shooting with fellow cosplay photographers SNTP, RickyFromVegas and cosplay videographer ChillyWillyTube in the underground parking garage where the weather wasn’t an issue. While not the most ideal location to take 90% of your photos in, I really did enjoy working in these areas as it allowed for some extra creativity in terms of lighting and finding locations that worked with the costumes.
I’d like to give a big thanks to all of the cosplayers, photographers and everyone else who I had the opportunity to work with this weekend and look forward to seeing everyone at the next SoCal convention!
